Artists
P etersfield
Artists in Town (PAinT)
now over but will run again in 2008. For more information please
see the official website: www.petersfieldartistsintown.org.uk
Jonquil Bond,
President of PAinT says: "It is seven years since I proposed
that Petersfield should have an Art Trail. I was aware that
there was a huge range of creative talent of all sorts in the
town, but that people either had little in the way of a forum,
or were having to travel to other towns to show or perform their
work.
"I wasn't aware,
of course, of the true extent of this creativity. Every year,
more and more people have become involved and during the PAinT
week, our lovely town takes on a new and vibrant quality."
And how true that
is. PainT is a great opportunity to pick up on the creative work
being done all around the region - it's also a fine excuse to
check out some of Petersfield's best independent shops, cafes
and restaurants as well as galleries, all of whom give up wall,
shelf and floorspace to some great creative work. Full details,
including a map of the venues here.
Philip Jackson
"I
was overcome by Venice's atmosphere of melancholia on my first
visit, and inspired by the strange mixture of historical
resonance, beauty and decay." Philip Jackson in an interview
with the late Sheridan Morley, 2001.
Where else to
start but with the sculptor
Philip
Jackson, surely the region's greatest artist. Wonderfully
dramatic and atmospheric figures, many Venetian-inspired, which
always seem to myPetersfield to be both spooky and humorous.
Wickedly funny, perhaps. His workshop and gallery is open to the
public from Monday to Friday every week, displaying large
and small pieces depending on what is being exhibited elsewhere.
Beautiful framed sketches too. Keep an eye out for
occasional outdoor exhibitions - his major exhibition on the
lawns and gardens of West Dean two years ago was unforgettable.
