Art Club Saturday morning club at The Grange in Midhurst for kids aged 6 - 10. Artistic, creative, messy and fun - lots of stuff that kids love to do but you might draw the line at in the home environment. Great stuff. Contact Nancy on 07766 919231 or email artworks01@aol.com.

Petersfield Youth Theatre Vibrant Theatre troupe  putting on a dozen or more shows a year out of the Festival Hall. Definitely attend and if you're young, think about participating. Johnny Depp had to start somewhere. 01730 266730 www.petersfieldyouththeatre.org.uk

Intech, Science for Kids and Families. Near Winchester INTECH, Telegraph Way, Morn Hill, Winchester, Hampshire, SO21 1HX, 01962 863791. Bit of a mini Science Museum, loads of hands-on stuff, great adventure space, cafe, excellent for birthday parties.

Fishers Farm Park. Brilliant space for all ages but geared around kids and families. Part animal farm - get up close and really quite personal with sheep, goats, calves, horses - part vast adventure playground with huge slides, sandpits, diggers, trampolines, go-karts, even an artificial beach. Excellent cafe restaurant and even, god bless 'em, a bar for dads and not a few mums to while away an hour or so with a pint and the papers while their darlings work off some e-numbers in the extensive soft playzone. Will lay on a complete birthday party or just provide a room for you to host your own. Outside our usual geography but too good not to recommend. Get there: about 35 minutes from Petersfield, perhaps five miles past Petworth on the A272, a mile or so past Wisborough Green. Newpound Lane, Wisborough Green, West Sussex RH14 0EG Telephone: 01403 700063 Email: info@fishersfarmpark.co.uk GMAP

Other places not dedicated to children but which sensible boys and girls will enjoy include:

Weald and Downland Museum: museum dedicated to ancient ways of life but by no means dry. Heavy horses and other animals, historic houses and cottages to explore and lots of organised events in the holidays. More detail here.

The Lido: no flumes, whirlpools or any of that caper, but a lovely outdoor pool with a deep end deep enough to dive in and a proper diving board. More detail here.

Watercress Line ancient steam train running from Alton to Alresford. More detail here.

Petersfield Library: It's a library - you know, books and stuff. Excellent children's section, videos and music as well as games, occasional events on Saturday, films.. 27 The Square, Petersfield, GU32 3HH, 01730 263 451

One Tree Books has an excellent children's section, plus games and a tolerant cafe. More detail here.

Marwell Zoo  myPetersfield doesn't like zoos much, but we like Marwell. Loads of space for people and animals, some proper big fierce things that would eat you given half a chance, and some amazing creatures from Madagascar, Marwell's speciality. Home to the fabulous fossa, and families of lemurs which are beyond cute. Open virtually all year. Only the cafes, which are horrible, let the place down - take your own food. Marwell Zoological Park, Colden Common, Winchester, Hants SO21 1JH. Just south of Winchester on the M3. 01962 777407

West Wittering the only beach of note that anyone talks about round here. Not just for the little ones... great for dogs and anyone looking to be braced by that unique Channel breeze. More details here.

Butser Ancient Farm Recreating life 2,000 years ago and constantly improving understanding of life in prehistoric and Roman Britain. Off the A3 a few miles south of Petersfield. Contact 023 9259 8838.
